Hi readers! I realise that my last couple posts were quite serious and sad, so I thought it was time for a bit of fun. I’ve already done my favourtite TV shows, so here are my top 10 favourite movies of all time, of course this list may change over time and if so, I’ll update it ENJOY!
Logan (2017)
I know what you’re thinking, “Oh you’re only saying it’s your number one favourite because it’s modern.” I can see your point but that’s simply not true. After seeing this movie, I remember walking out of the cinema and thinking to myself “Wow! That was amazing, I think that might be the best film I’ve seen in a long time.” and I was right. This film really does have it all, action, great storytelling, strong emotion and fantastic performances from the actors. Each of the three main characters truly gave it their all, of course Hugh Jackman and Sir Patrick Stewart did a wonderful job but I would like point out the performance from Dafne Keen aka Laura/X-23. Her performance was outstanding, for such a young girl to be so believable and get across exactly what she’s feeling, all without even speaking for half the movie, well that really is great acting. Other than the performaces, The story itself is wondeful, it was so perfect for Hugh Jackman’s farewell as Wolverine. It wraps up his and other characters stories so well, also from interviews I’ve seen, this movie was a lobour of love by the cast and crew. Since it was an end of an era the main cast and director put so much passion into making it for themselves and the fans and it definately comes through in the end. If you haven’t seen it, you’re missing out.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
This may seem a strange one to be so high up on this list but please let me explain. I’ve always loved the Harry Potter movies, I did grow up with them after all. Besides that I like the change in tone from the first two movies, “Prisoner of Azkaban” definately has a much darker tone and as you may be able to tell from earlier posts, that’s my style. Another change I like is the story of the third installment in the franchise, this is the only entry that doesn’t feature Voldermort as the main villain. Some may not like that but I do, it’s a nice breather from the wider story. Replacing Voldermort, the Dementors are a great villain/monster. They represent death and as you’ll all know death is the greatest fear of all. Also the main actors at this point, I think had began to relax into their characters, having played them twice before. Another thing I enjoy about this movie is the time travel element (I like pretty much anything with time travel.) I know some fans find the time turners annoying but I think it works well in this case. They seed the time travel element all through the movie but the audience doesn’t realise it until near the end. I remember being a thirteen yesr old and loving this film (I may have had a crush on Emma Watson at the time… and still do, but that doesn’t make me biased I swear!) All jokes aside, this is simply a good film that I really ejoyed when it came out and still enjoy to this day.
Back to the Future (1985)
This trilogy is sacred to the sci-fi fan community and for many good reasons. Although I appreciate parts two & three as much as anyone else, I’d have to say the first movie is my favourite. Although it does make mistakes when it comes to time travel logic, I forgive that because it really tries and is just so much fun. I’m not really sure exactly what it is that makes “Back to the Future” so great but it just is. Something I’ve always thought that proves just how great the films story is, part of the plot is a borderline incestuous relationship between Marty and his young mother and people don’t seem to mind that! If anything should put people off the film it’s that, if the film didn’t have something special then that plot element almost certianly would have brought the franchsie to an end right there and then. The Doc and Marty characters have become iconic, along with their Delorean time mochine. Some people won;t a four chapter more than anything, personally I’m in two minds about that. Part of me would love to see Doc & Marty on a brand new adventure but another part doesn’t want to risk the franchise being messed up and would rather leave it as it is.
Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn (1987)
I’m sure no horror fan is surprised to see this movie on the list. Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell are very well known figures in the horror community. This movie was pretty much their big break that made them as well known as they are now. Some may say “Oh it’s just the same as the original.” and yes to a certain point it is the same but that was due to some legal issues over film rights blah blah blah look it up. Anyway I don’t think many movies get the mix of horror and comedy correct but “Evil Dead 2” does in my opinion. They found a way to make it slapstick but still scary and not just silly. While other franchise installments did a good job, I think this one did it best.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Do I really need to say much about this one? I love the MCU as almost all geeks do and Endgame was the culmination of eleven years of laughs, fights and tears. There’s no much I can actually say without giving away spoilers, so I’ll keep this entry short. If you love comic books and haven’t watched the MCU movies yet… Then you’ve clearly been kidnapped and held hostage in a cave. (Anyone who gets that reference, you’re my new friend.)
Shaun of the Dead (2004)
A Zombie movie on this list! Oh what a shocker that is. As with “Evil Dead 2” I think this is another horror-comedy that gets it right. It seems an unlikely film to become as popular as it has, it’s a british film made on a not so big budget but hey people like it and I’m one of them. The first in the Cornetto trilogy, you can tell a lot of talented and creative minds went into making it. It uses the classic Romero Zombies in great ways to show off their creepy and scary potential. It really shows how the great british public would probably react, if they opened their bedroom curtains to find the start of the Zombie apocalypse. Some bits may seems strange to any non-brits but chances are they’ll enjoy the overall charm of the film.
The Mummy (1999)
There might be some nostalgia fueling my affection for this film but even without that, it’s still a good film in my eyes. Feel free to disagree with my but this is my list, go make your own LOL. This film has a special position in my house, as not only is it in my top ten favourite movies but it’s also my mothers favourite film without a doubt. Shes seen it hundreds of times but everytime it’s on TV she’ll watch it without fail, same goes for it’s sequel. The effects are still decent quality, even after all this time, which I think says something. The Mummy himself (Before fully regenerated) is quite the achievement in early CGI, as you do feel like he’s really there with the actors in the scenes. I’m sure some people prefer the classic Mummy movie and that’s fine, that movie is great too but I think this one is not to be underestimated.
From Dusk till Dawn (1996)
This is a movie that has become a cult favourite over time, obviously one of my favourites too since it’s on this list. This one in theory shouldn’t work, it’s like two completely different movies with pushed together but somehow it works. At first it’s a film about two criminals on the run, taking a family hostage in order to flee the country. Then all of a sudden, about half way through…VAMPIRES! It comes out of nowhere and with no warning. As I said, that shouldn’t work but as it goes sometimes things that shouldn’t go together work the best. As a Vampire movie I like it because it doesn’t dull down the Vampires, they aren’t misunderstood or cursed victims oh no. They are blood thirsty monsters as Vampires should be, as soon as they show up there’s a gruesome bloodbath and it’s brilliant. Another odd thing about this movie is that there isn’t really a protagonist, the main character (Played by George Clooney) is a wanted criminal, who definately is not a good guy. However due to Clooney’s natural charisma, you can’t help but root for him. I first watched this movie a long time ago and it’s always stuck in my mind. In particular Salma Hayek’s snake dance scene, which for an adolescent boy made a big impression. (Anyone who’s watched that scene will understand.)
30 Days of Night (2007)
Another Vampire movie that portrays Vampires the right way, blood thirsty killing machines. This is a movie based on a comic book series of the same name. It’s general plot is a small town in Alaska is attacked by a group of Vampires during a thirty day period when the town is without light from the Sun (Which is a real thing by the way.) The only negative I’d say about this movie, is that it does seem to drag on at times. There are lengthy scenes of the characters sitting in silence and whispering to each other. I makes sense in the film but if you don’t have much patience, you might find it a bit boring. The good points of it though are the Vampires are well thought out and actually scary, they even have their own language in the movie. That’s all I can really say about this one, if you like Vampire movies give it a try.
Night of the Living Dead (1990)
To finish off the list is the colour remake of George A Romero’s classic “Night of the Living Dead”. I know some people hate me already for putting the remake above the original but before you try to hang me, hear me out. I’m a big Zombie fan, I love the original I truly do but in the end it’s all down to personal preference and I personally prefer the remake. Both movies are great but anyone will have to admit the remake is more eventful and action packed than the original. The original can be a little slow at times while the remake goes on at a steady pace. Another improvement is the character Barbara, you know “They’re coming to get you Barbara.” In the original she’s pretty much useless, all she does is sit on the couch looking like she’s in a trance the whole time. In the remake however, while she does start out that way, over time she gains confidence and courage and by the end becomes a hero. There are faults as with any film of course, some of the practial effects haven’t aged well at all, two moments in particular stand out to me. I’m sure at the time they were acceptable but now they look absolutely terrible, a three year old could tell they were fake. Please give the movie a watch, if you’re a Zombie fan I’m sure they’ll enjoy it but keep a look out for those two moments I mentioned, see if you can spot them.
