Losing Someone To Dementia

Apologies to all, for the long absence, I’ve been dealing with some issues. Mainly family stuff, which I won’t go into detail about, I’m sure you understand. Anyway, I hope you all enjoyed the festive period, I know not every Christmas can be good, but if you could find one thing to be happy about, it’d be worth it.

I want to talk today about the horrible illness that is Dementia, I believe it is truly one of the worst things in this world today. I have a grandfather with Dementia, so I’ve seen what it does to people. It destroys them, and by that I don’t mean kill them (Although it does that too). I mean it destroys them as a person, slowly taking away parts of their personality, their very essence, until they’re nothing but an echo of their true selves.

My grandfather is like a second dad to me, I remember the person who helped raise me, now looking at him, I barely recognise him. There are some moments the real him comes to the surface, but most of the time, he’s someone else, someone I don’t know. The thing about Dementia, it doesn;t just hurt the person with it, it harms all the perople arounf them. Their family, friends, neighbours, people who love them, have to watch them fade a little more each day. Let me tell you, seeing that happen hurts a lot.

For a long time, my grandmother was my grandfather’s full time carer, she did eerythign for him, including putting up with his increasingly difficult behaviour. I’ve always been extremely close to my grandmother, so seeing her struggle and knowing there’s nothing I can really do, has been heart breaking. Eventually, the strain just became too much for her, leaving him in a home was one of the hardest things, she’s had to do in her life. It killed us all to do it, but we knew it was in his best interests.

That’s another thing, that bastard Dementia does, it forces you to make soul crushing choices. At this point, my grandfather’s quality of life is so bad, that we’re considering stopping his extra medication and just letting him go with what dignity he has left. Of course, that’s the last thing we want to do but it’s the eternal tug of war, between your heart and head. Your head knows it’s what’s best for him, but your heart is screaming to keep him with us, for as long as possible.

What happens from here, I don’t know, but whatever it is, I just want my grandfather, who I love with all my heart, not to suffer anymore and to be at peace. If that means losing him, I know it’ll crush me but if that’s what’s best for him, I think I can learn to accept it. To all those out there, living with Dementia or with a loved one who has it, I want you to know, it’s beyond words terrible but you’re not alone. There are wonderful carers out there that can and want to help you, also brilliant Doctors are working on Dementia research everyday, hopefully one day there’ll discover a cure, and the days of this illness destroying lives, will be a thing of the past.

Underrated Movies

Hello all, I’ll admit I struggled to come up with a new post idea about movies. However, yesterday an idea came to me, while I was thinking of a movie I could watch. You’d think all great movies get the attention they deserve but sadly we don’t live in a perfect world. Many smaller, lower budget films turn out fantastic but due to a variety of things, it never reaches the audience it probably should. So I want to show these films some love, this is my list of lesser known movies I’ve seen and I recommend you all do the same.

Siren

Siren is a 2016 horror movie and spin off of a segment from the 2012 movie V/H/S, known as “Amateur Night”. It’s a relatively simple plot, a group of guys go out for their friends bachelor party, things aren’t quite as fun and wild as expected, until one of the group hears of a secret club within driving distance. They go and something just doesn’t feel right, the guests are creepy, so is the owner and the groom-to-be encounters someone or something unimaginable. I don’t want to spoil it if you haven’t seen V/H/S but this movie expands that segment into a bigger story, it’s certainly creepy, well worth a watch.

Splinter

Splinter is a 2008 horror film that mostly revolves around three characters, a young couple and the man who kidnapped them, oh yeah you heard me right! The basic plot is that the young couple are abducted in the country by a man at gunpoint. They stop off at a gas station but find something much worse is happening there, something that shifts the dynamic. The characters are forced to work together in order to survive the natural abomination that’s taking over the bodies of them and the people unfortunate enough to be around at the time. I won’t say much more but I’ll say this, if you’re a fan of “The Thing” or body horror in general, I suspect you’ll like this movie.

Slither

Slither is a 2006 body horror/comedy movie, starring Elizabeth Banks and Michael Rooker. Like the above movie, this one is another one for body horror fans. It’s difficult to talk about these movies without spoiling them, so I’ll just say, aliens possessing people, slimy alien slugs and zombie-like creatures, is that enough for ya? LOL

Phone Booth

Phone Booth is a 2003 Thriller, I know what some of you are thinking “What’s a phone booth?”, well google it or look for the broken down old boxes on street corners. This movie revolves around an intelligent psycho and his victim, a wealthy man who’s morals aren’t the best. Personally I like this film because of its confined space aspect, if any of you feel the same I’d recommend looking this movie up. It’s smart and tense, you never know for sure what the next move will be, or how it will all end.

Frozen

No not that one! Frozen is a 2010 thriller film, it had a small budget but it uses it well. It’s basically about three people, through bad luck end up trapped on a ski lift for days. No one knows they’re there and no one is coming to help them. Stuck with no food or drink and with the ice cold temperatures slowly killing them, they must become creative in an attempt to get down and save themselves. The movie counts on the main actors performances, which I must say are quite good. The movie really uses it’s concept to its full potential, in a realistic and creative way.

Hush

Hush is a 2016 slasher film, it like others on this list takes place in just one location and involve a small number of characters. This movie kind of turns many things around, the main character is deaf & mute, which you would think would put her at a disadvantage but she uses her brain to use her disability to her advantage. The other main character is a masked killer, who comes across the deaf woman’s house by chance. Realising she can’t hear him, the killer sees his chance to have some fun, messing with her before he finishes the job. Another thing this movie does well, is avoiding typical scary movie cliches. Just when you think something is about to happen, it doesn’t, when you think a character is about to do the typical stupid thing, they don’t and when you expect a jump scare, it doesn’t come. This movie does a lot of clever things with its story and it benefits well from that, I’d highly recommend this one.

Pokemon Sword & Shield Best & Worst Designs (Galar Pokedex)

Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield have been out for a few days now, leaks have been online even longer. I’ve never been a massive Pokemon fan but as a 90s kid, I can’t help but be interested when new games come out. I know a lot of fans care much more about new moves, abilities and items but to me, the most important part of new games is the new Pokemon within them. I know everyones opinion is different, so keep in mind this is just mine. As a resident of the Galar region (aka United Kingdom), I think I have the right to judge my regions pokemon on their designs.

(Best)

Corviknight

This was one of the first Galar Pokemon officially shown to the public, straight away it became a new fan favourite. I can easily see why that is, let’s face it, this metal bird just looks really cool. It’s like an upgraded, darker version of Skarmory, it could be its evolution but it stand just fine on its own. Corviknight is the final stage of the regional bird line in Galar, they also seem to be an awesome taxi-like service in Galar, flying people all over the region. I don’t know about you but I’d choose flying on a awesome large metal bird over taking an Uber anyday.

Coalossal

Another Galar Pokemon that just looks cool, or hot in the case of this Rock/Fire type Pokemon. Rolycoly may not look very strong or intimidating but its final evolution definitely does. Coalossal is a real beast, its apperance screams strength and awesomeness, its clearly based on the British coal industry, with coal literally being part of its body and the source of its Fire typing. According to the pokedex, it’s genrally a peaceful Pokemon, a gentle giant unless you harm coal mining caves in anyway. So if I were you, I’d show respect to the caves.

Centiskorch

This is one of my personal favourites, in terms of design for Galar Pokemon. I know exactly why that is, it’s because Centiskorch is clearly based on the ancient insect Arthropleura. If you don’t know what that is and you don’t like giant bugs, I wouldn’t recommend googling it. I’m not the biggest fan of bugs in general but Arthropleura, I quite like for some reason. So, the idea of an Arthropleura with Fire powers, ok that’s fantastic.

Grimmsnarl

Next on the best list is what I’ve heard some people refer to as the “Devil Pokemon”, admittedly I can understand that nickname. Grimmsnarl does look like a green demon but for some reason I like it, it’s definitely ugly, there’s no doubt about that. With its long fangs and large pointy nose and ears but it’s ugly in a cool interesting way rather than a disgusting way. The Pokedex also says it’s very strong, it uses its long hair as a weapon in battle, which is new and interesting. It’s a Dark/Fairy type, so I would decribe it as an Antihero figure, at times aggressive and mischievous but no bad at heart. If I were playing the game, I’d almost certainly add this final form of Impidimp to my main team.

Frosmoth

Another new Bug type! This bug also as the power of Ice on its side. In a way it’s kind of the counterpart of Centiskorch, which is a Fire/Bug type, while Frosmoth is a Ice/Bug type. Another parallel is that Centiskorch crawls on the ground, while Frosmoth flies through the air. I can’t decide which bug I prefer, and I refuse to choose between them. You just look at Frosmoth and think “Ok, that looks cool, literally!”, a flying ice moth does sound like something you’d want as a pet, plus its pre-evolution is pretty cute, so there’s that.

(Worst)

Applin – Flapple – Appletun

I know this a whole evolution line, instead of one Pokemon but I had to put all of them on the worst design list. I don’t want to insult the designers but they really must have had an off day, when they came up with these things. As you can probably tell by their names, they’re all based on Apples, that could be a good idea but they did not do it right, when I first saw these new Pokemon, I thought to myself “How stupid do they look?”. Applin is nothing but a worm inside an Apple, Flapple is a small Lizard with Apple chunks as wings and Appletun is literally a living Apple pie, I mean how dumb does that sound?!. I’m honestly ashamed to call them Galar Pokemon.

Sinsitea – Polteageist

These Pokemon I don’t like simply because they don’t make sense, I don’t like any Pokemon that don’t make logical sense, I know the Pokemon world doesn’t keep to our laws of Science but I want them to at least try to make them believable. So let me ask you, how on Earth, does an animal hatch already inside a teacup/teapot? I know they were doing the whole British people drink a lot of Tea thing but come on! Some Pokemon carrying sticks or Vegetables, I get because they’re found in the wild but since when are Teacups/pots found in the wild?! I know it’s just a game but It gets on my nerves, so there sue me.

Galarian Meowth – Perrserker

These I don’t like because they obvious exist purely to prey on fans emotions, Meowth is a original and popular Pokemon, so the game makers pounce on it, and milk it as much as they can. Meowth already has a regional variant in Alola, now it’s the only Pokemon to have more than one regional variant (I wonder why?). No one asked for another form of Mewoth but they made one anyway, and boys and girls that’s not all. Not only do we have Galarian Meowth but also Gigantamax Meowth. Noone can tell me that the Pokemon Company are not abusing Meowth for profit. I don’t like Galarian Meowth’s evolution Perrserker for one reason and one reason only, it doesn’t need to exist. Meowth already has an evolution Persian, and in Alola we got Alolan Persian, so why wouldn’t they just make Galarian Persian? I don’t get it.

Eiscue

I saved the best, or worst in this case for last. I won;t be saying much about this new Pokemon, because if I start I may never stop. This Ice type Pokemon, is literally a real world Penguin with it’s head cut off and a giant ice cube stuck on. It is without a doubt, in my eyes the laziest designed Pokemon ever! Some people say the Pokemon Company are running out of Pokemon design ideas, I didn’t believe it but after seeing this Pokemon, I’m seriously starting to change my mind. It’s just so dumb and lacks any creativity, it shouldn’t be a Pokemon, simple as that.

Life as a Picky Eater

Hello readers, the food you eat is clearly important but for many people around the world, their diet is a struggle on a daily basis. I’m one of those people, I don’t want to say too much but I have multiple issues in my life and my diet is one of the biggies. I hope someone like me will see this post and think “Oh, that sounds like me, I guess I’m not totally alone.”

Describing me as a picky eater would be an understatement, my diet is quite limited. No one else in my family is picky with food and the thing is, I wasn’t born that way myself. From what I’m told, when I was a baby and toddler, I would eat pretty much everything put in front of me. The turning point came when I was three years old, I came down with a horrible illness, that made me violently sick everytime I ate anything. Of course, since I was so young I don’t remember this at all but logic tells me, being so young and in pain, my brain made the link between eating and vomiting.

From that event, my view on food changed forever. I think deep down in my subconcious, it decided that eating certain foods results in pain. Over time, a mental block formed in my mind that prevented me from trying a lot of foods. That may sound weird to some but believe me it’s real, whenever I try to try new foods, it feels like something inside me is physically holding me back from putting it in my mouth. I know it’s probably mostly in my mind and if I tried new foods, I may well enjoy them, there are many meals others cook that I like the smell of but again due to the mental block, built up of decades, it’s difficult to go near them.

My family is used to me and my specific dietary needs but it is a big insecurity of mine. I know being a picky eater holds me back both physically and socially. Let me explain physically, due to both my parents heights, I suspect that I should be taller than I am, I think it likely that my picky diet, over the years didn’t give me all the right nutrients I needed to grow to my full potential. Now that I’m an adult, there’s not much I can do about that, now over to socially. I think other picky eaters would agree with me, that being a picky eater limits your ability to meet new people. Food and eating is a surprisingly big part of a social life, everything from a night out with friends to dating, eating in restaurants can be an awkward experience, as there’s only a few things on the menu I can eat, there have been multiple occasions, when I’ve been to a restaurant and they’re sold out of the meal I want, so I have to think on my feet over what to do next, while trying to appear normal and non-awkward.

I’ve tried many different techniques to remove my mental blocks and fix my diet, everything from sheer willpower to hypnosis. Some had an impact but I always reverted back to my version of normal sooner or later. Personally, I think that these mental blocks are so deep in my mind, they’ve been building up for so long now, that it’ll be so very difficult to break them down. I hope one day, somehow I find a way to get through my issue and start living a more normal and healthy life.

Doctor Sleep Movie Review (Spoilers)

Hello people of the internet, as the title of this post says, here is my spoiler review for the movie “Doctor Sleep”, which was released on 31st October 2019 in the UK. If I haven’t already made it crystal clear, this is a spoiler review, so if you haven’t seen the movie yet, don’t read this post then blame me for ruining the movie for you. Alright, so now that those people are gone, hello all my fellow “Doctor Sleep” viewers, let’s get on with the review.

Basic stuff first, “Doctor Sleep” is a 2019 movie, based on a novel of the same name by Stephen King, it is also a sequel to another Stephen King movie, “The Shining”. The movie’s main character is Danny Torrance, the young boy from “The Shining”, he’s now an adult and struggling with his past trauma, addiction and his “Shine” abilities. He meets a teenage girl Abra, who like him also “Shines”, however her powers are much greater than his, in fact much greater than most.

The other big part of the plot is the antagonists of the film, a group of people that hunt and feed on people who “Shine”. They’re known as “True Knot”, they use their prey’s powers to keep them young and extend their lives, but when we meet them they’re struggling. As with any hunters, there comes a point when you’ve hunted so many prey that finding more becomes harder and harder. When they sense Abra’s powerful abilities, they see an opportunity to keep them all fed for quite some time and head in her direction.

Abra contacts Danny and after some convincing from an old friend, Danny agrees to help her. The two form a mentor/mentee relationship, Abra even starts calling him “Uncle Dan”. She may be stronger than him but he has decades of experience using his powers that she simply doesn’t have. The pair recruite the help of their family and friends in creating a plan to trick “True Knot”, their trap is mostly a success, resulting in almost all the villainous group being shot down but it does come at the cost of Danny’s good friend Billy and Abra’s father.

With only the leader of “True Knot”, known as “Rose the Hat” left alive, she makes it her new purpose to track down and kill Abra, in vengence of her group. Danny thinking of a plan of attack, knowing they need an advantage over Rose, he relunctantly makes the decision to return to the Overlook Hotel, where he says exists things that are “Dangerous to people like them, so it must be dangerous for Rose too”. The final act is a real blast from the past, both for Danny and for the audience. It’s full of nods to “The Shining”, Danny even having a little chat with the spirit of his late father at the bar of all places. When Rose arrives, Danny & Abra inact their plan of releasing the dark spirits of the hotel and as expected, they quickly overwhelm Rose, killing her. However, of course, the spirits aren’t satisfied with that, they’re angry at being locked away by Danny for so long, like his father before him, they possess him and makes him hunt down Abra. She’s able to break through to Danny and he holds back the spirits long enough for her to leave and set the hotel on fire. Danny dies in the blaze but finally finds peace in the afterlife.

Overall, I enjoyed this move quite a bit, I’d say it is a worthy sequel to “The Shining”, however that isn’t all it is. It doesn’t try too much to be a sequel and instead makes sure it’s a interesting film by itself. You care about the characters, much due to the actors performances, if you haven’t seen “The shining”, they’re will be multiple things you may not quite understand but in general, “Doctor Sleep” is a movie anyone who likes suspense and a good story can enjoy. I’d recommend seeing it in cinemas, my overall rating 8/10.

Halloween and Me

Spooky Halloween one and all!!! I’m British, so Halloween isn’t as big here as elsewhere in the world but it still has its fans over here. I’m a horror fan in general, so I do enjoy the vibe of the whole Halloween season, any excuse to embrace the dark side LOL. However, as much as I enjoy Halloween, I do have a odd relationship with it, allow me to explain.

As I said, as a Brit, I’ve never gone full spooktacular, if I was American I’m sure it would be different but hey, what can you do? Growing up, as a little boy, my parents did dress me up in a simple little costume and take me to my relatives houses, so I could show off. That’s pretty much all I did though, I never did go to Halloween parties or Halloween sleepovers, anything like that. That was mainly due to one thing, my mother.

I’m not 100% sure why it is, but she absolutely cannot stand Halloween or anything to do with it. Becuase of this, she refused to take me to do Halloween stuff, trick or treating, spooky discos etc… Where I’m from Halloween isn’t a big deal, so I don’t feel that I missed out. The thing is, she’s a horro fan like me, not as much as me but still, but Halloween? Oh no, she would kill it off if she could. Every Halloween night, our house goes into shutdown, all lights off, all curtains shut, years back she would even tape our letterbox shut. If you’re a trick or treater out for the evening, best forget our house, you could knock until your knuckles bled, wouldn’t matter, there’s no way we’re answering that door.

I honestly don’t know why she’s so against Halloween, she’s not like that with any other holiday, but Halloween doesn’t exist as far as she’s concerned. Some of you may think that’s mean and who knows maybe you’re right, I’m so used to it now, that I don’t think twice anymore. My mother’s not a mean person by any means, if a friend or family’s kid wants to show off their costume, she’ll play along and compliment them, she’ll even give them a sweet but that’s as far as her spooky spirit goes. To her, Halloween is just a good night to sit in the dark and watch a scary film, which I have no problem with. If I’m lucky enough to have kids one day, I don’t think I’ll be as closed off to it as my mother was/is, but I don’t think I can see myself going full on either, decorating the house with fake bats and cobwebs (Unless my future wife loves Halloween of course, in that case we’ll probaly start celebrating in September.)

Best “Treehouse of Horror” Segments (The Simpsons)

First off, I’d like to apologise for the lack of posts on this blog over the last couple weeks. I’ve had family problems, so I’ve neglected my blog a bit but I’m back now so here goes. The Simpsons is a classic show, it’s been around for three decades now, even longer than I’ve existed! Although in my opinion, the quality of the show has gone down over the years, I’ve always thought the Halloween specials were the best episodes. Instead of one story, you get multiple short segmented stories (Plus I’ve always enjoyed horror). So here goes, the best “Treehouse of Horror” segments (In my opinion)

Dial “Z” for Zombies (1992)

This is my personal favouritre and I think deserves the top spot on this list. Part of Season 4, this segment is clearly a porody of verious Zombie movies. In the early days, I think “The Simpsons” knew how to blend gorror and comedy correctly for their Halloween specials, now they’ve pretty much dropped all horror and just make them as silly as possible. Of course it’s short but they tell a great story of how badly things can go when messing with the dark arts. I really enjoy the Zombie genre, so maybe I’m biased but I think you can tell the writers hit gold on this one, highly recommend.

Bart Simpson’s Dracula (1993)

Another early one, although I think not as good overall as the top choice, I would say this one is certainly creepier. Mr Burns as Dracula fits so well and the creepy music in the background of this segement really helps it get under your skin. Even though it’s creepy, with it being “The Simpsons” it still has its fair share of jokes. One that’s always made me chuckle is Homer yelling “SUPER FUN HAPPY SLIDE” like an exicted child. Plus the dangerous situation being obvious to Lisa, while the rest of the family are completely blind to it is classic Simpsons. Another segment I’d highly recommend.

Terror at 5 1/2 Feet (1993)

A segment from the same episode as “Bart Simpson’s Dracula” (Hey what can I say, it’s a good episode). Anyone out there who’s a fan of “The Twilight Zone” will know it parodies the episode “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet”. In “The Twilight Zone” the setting was an airplane, in “The Simpsons” it was the school bus (Very fitting, if you ask me). During the drive, Bart spots a ugly little gremlin on the outaide of the bus, slowly damaging and sabotaging it, he tries to inform other but they think he’s insane and over the course of the segment Bart wonders whether he actually is. Considering they are just on a school bus, there’s a quite tense atmosphere and you really do wonder if what Bart’s seeing is real or just in his mind.

Clown without Pity (1992)

This segment starts off happily enough with Bart’s birthday party, of course his father forgot to but him a gift, so off Homer goes and the first place he gets to is a store full of cursed objects (As only Homer could). He decides on a cursed Krusty the Clown doll and it doesn’t seem to like Homer very much wink wink! I know my choices so far are all early episodes but as I said, I feel that’s when the show was at its best. Another early gem from “The Simpsons”, give it a watch.

The Shinning (1994)

Before you say, yes I did spell that right (You don’t want to get sued do you?), if you’ve seen this segment, you’ll get that joke. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you this but I will anyway, this segment is a parody of the classic horror movie “The Shining”. The Simpson family take a job watching over an old hotel during the winter owned by Mr Burns. With no current guests (Living ones that is) the hotel is quiet and eerie, Mr Burns cuts off the TV and Beer supply, in hopes that it’ll make the family focus on thier work but unfortunately all it does is send Homer insane. I don’t think I need to say much more, if you’ve seen “The Shining” (And you should) then I think you’ll get almost as much enjoyment out of this.

Honourable Mentions

These Segments are almost certainly worth a watch but didn’t quite make the top five (In my opinion at least).

. Nightmare Cafeteria (1994)

. The Thing and I (1996)

. Bad Dream House (1990)

. I know what you Did-iddly-did (1999)

. Nightmare on Evergreen Terrace (1995)

. Homer3 (1995)

. Time and Punishment (1994)

. The Devil and Homer Simpson (1993)

Spider-man Returns Home

Hello all my fellow geeks! I’m sure by now you’ve heard the good news that Spider-man aka Peter Parker is coming back to the MCU after a short split between mummy Disney and daddy Sony. According to reports late in the night on Thursday 26th September 2019, a new deal was agreed and signed between Disney and Sony that allowed our favourite webhead to stay with his Marvel family.

This new deal seems to be shorter than the previous deal, as it states that Disney/Marvel will make Spider-man 3 (Which will be set in the MCU) and Spider-man can appear in one other non-solo MCU movie. After that who knows but myself, I think they’ll agree another short deal and that’ll be the way that do things from now on. Instead of agreeing to multi-picture deals (Like their first deal) Disney/Marvel and Sony will make a series of short term agreements and see how things go.

Also besides Spidey staying in the MCU, it’s now highly likely that Tom Holland’s Spider-man will cross into Sony’s Venomverse and interact with Venom, Carnage, Morbius the living vampie etc. Then once that happens, he can cross back over to the MCU for big team events like the Avengers movies, however due to legal issues the character won’t be allowed to discuss his adventures in the other studios movies, they will have happened but he just won’t talk about them.

Personally I’d prefer it if DIsney just bought the rights to Spider-man and his associated characters back from Sony. It would be a sh#tload of money yes but at least then we wouldn’t have to worry about all this behind the scenes studio agreement stuff. I’m sure I speak for all comic fans when I say, we’d love to see all the Marvel family together on the big screen. The fantastic Four and X-Men are now back home and we’ll be seeing them soon (Which is fantastic! Excuse the pun) but the ultimate dream is having every family member back home at Marvel where they belong.

Brexit

Well well oh boy here goes… I planned on staying well away from touchy subjects like Politics and Religion, as we all know those conversations can turn nasty real quick. However I do want to discuss current events and if you’re British, talking about Brexit is almost unavoidable. As I’m writing this the Brexit date is October 31st 2019 (Although there’s a good chance that’ll change) Halloween, the night where darkness falls across the land and order is replaced by chaos… yep that sounds about right.

Now I won’t say how I voted in the 2016 EU referendum (Some things should stay private) but I’ll say I’m definately not a remoaner. We all voted, leave won, if you don’t like that go lock yourself in a room, cry for a while maybe punch a pillow imagining it’s David Cameron then come out take a deep breath and accept what happened (That’s what I did when Trump won 2016 US election but that’s a post all of its own). No matter how you voted, I think we can all agree (Including politicians themselves) that the politicians have royally f**ked things up. It’s like they came up with an essay titled “How to make Brexit work” and then just did the exact opposite.

Throughout the whole thing I’ve tried my best to see both sides opinion (Although I do still get pissed off sometimes). Brexiteers want to be out of the EU I think to change this country on a fundamental level. Which is understandable, the UK may be a rich country but it is far from perfect, there are fatal flaws throughtout this country, everything from the legal system to the NHS have problems that can’t be solved with quick fixes (Putting a plaster over a gaping wound). Despite our wealth as a nation, we have sick people leaving on the streets and ignored, children going to bed almost every night hungry because their family can’t afford food, criminals going free to walk amongst us due to corruption and greedy companies killing the planet just because they can. The only way to fix these problems is with major change and people saw voting to leave the EU as a way to achieve that level of change. It’s a big risk, no one can deny that but when your life feels empty and hopeless, when you have nothing why would you vote for everything to stay the same? Leaving the EU after decades comes with much uncertainty but at least with uncertainty there’s hope that things will get better.

The remainers on the other hand don’t want to take the risk of the worst outcome happening and this country falling apart, that too is understandable. As I said leaving the EU is risky, a lot could go wrong and being afraid and wanting to prevent any chance of this makes sense. Some people and parties want to simply ignore the referendum result and cancel Brexit completely, I don’t agree with that personally, the only way democracy can survive is if it is protected and viewed above all else. If we start picking when and when not to follow democracy, we start going down a slippery slope. If that’s allowed then another thing will be allowed then another and before you know it the UK will be nothing but a dictatorship. Others want to delay Brexit until a deal can be reached, this is a more middle ground approach, obeying the result but leaving with the minimum amount of risk possible.

That sounds good doesn’t it? And it would be if politicians weren’t putting their own interests above that of the country as a whole. Instead of putting aside differences for the greater good, they all just shout and fight each other. Lib Dems are obsessed with not following democracy and ignoring what the majority of the public voted for, basically saying “We know what you said people but you’re wrong, we know what’s best so that’s what we’re gonna do”. That is not only morally wrong but flat out insulting. The SNP only give a damn about Scotland and everyone else can go rot for all they care. Tories and Labour well, they’ve both just gone mad haven’t they? Neiher of them know for certain what they want or what they’re going to do, everytime one of them does anything the other just tries to stop it at all costs, no matter what it is just because they want to get one over on the enemy. Brexit is the hardest and most dangerous thing to happen to this country since the end of WW2 and anyone of decent intelligence would realise this and do their absolute best to get us through this in the smoothest possible way. However what we’ve gotten is a house of commons full of grown adults that sound more like kids arguing in the playground.

Everyone’s looking for someone to blame, Tories, Labour, Boris Johnson, Theresa May, Jeremy Corbyn, Nigel Farage but the truth is they’re all to blame. All political parties and every single MP have played their part in this mess. Some have done more than others but all of them must take responsibility for the shambles that is British politics today. If I had it my way, as soon as Brexit was completed, however it ends up every MP should be forced out and replaced. Perhaps that way we might just have some sensible adults representing us, which we clearly don’t have now.

My Short Film

I never thought this would happen, a lot of people look into their future and imagine what is to come. Many things can be seen coming a mile away but at least for me, this wasn’t seen even ten miles away. It all started back in 2016, I was looking for something to do, where I could do something fun and meet new people at the same time. Through chance I came across an indepedent production company “Watchers Productions” based in Cardiff.

They were making a web series “Whovians”, based around characters who are big Doctor Who fans and their lives. I was brought in for season 2 episode 1, I remember them being very friendly and happy to have me on board (I guess me having a full size Dalek had something to do with it.). Anyway, I was the Dalek operator on that episode and also appeared as an extra (So my face was actually in it.) After a weekends filming, my part was done and we all moved on.

However, years later I got in touch with the director for something unrelated and he told me that “Watchers Productions” were making a new project called “Strange Tales”. It’s a series of short films written, starring and made by local talent. Over a few days, I came up with a short story idea and wrote it. After sending it in, they told me they liked it and wanted to adapt it to film, of course I was thrilled to hear that. I don’t want to give anything away but I wrote my story as if it was an episode of “The Twilight Zone”. If you enjoy that show, then you’re probably the target audience for my short film.

Due to scheduling, my story won’t be filmed until mid 2020 but hey I’m sure seeing my work on screen will be worth the wait. If you want to watch the other short films made by “Watchers Productions” then check out “Strange Tales” Youtube channel.
